Somebody is on your website right now with a question. If answering it takes an email and a day of waiting, most of them leave. A chat widget catches that question in the moment — and for a one-person business, it’s the closest thing to hiring a receptionist for free.
This guide walks through adding live chat to any website with Tidio in about 15 minutes, with an honest look at what its free plan does and doesn’t include in 2026, because it changed — and most tutorials haven’t caught up.
What Tidio’s free plan actually includes (2026 — read this first)
Tidio’s free plan used to be “50 conversations per month.” It isn’t anymore. As of 2026, the free plan includes:
- 50 conversations total — a one-time allowance, not monthly
- The live chat widget, up to 10 seats, ticketing, and basic analytics
- A one-time trial bundle of Flows (chatbot automations) and Lyro (their AI agent)
So the free plan is best understood as an extended real-world trial: enough to run live chat on a low-traffic site for a while, see how many visitors actually engage, and find out what a conversation is worth to you — with real data instead of guesswork.
For a new site that gets a handful of chats a month, 50 conversations can genuinely last months. For anything busier, you’ll be deciding on the $29/month Starter plan within a few weeks. Either way you learn something valuable, which is why I still think it’s the right starting point — but you should walk in knowing the meter.
What you’ll need
- A website you can add code to (WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, or any static/custom site)
- An email address for the Tidio account
- 15 minutes
Step 1 — Create your Tidio account (2 minutes)
Go to tidio.com and sign up with your email (or Google account). During onboarding it asks for your website URL and business type — answer honestly, it uses this to preconfigure the widget. Skip anything marked optional; you can change every setting later.
Step 2 — Install the widget (5 minutes)
Tidio gives you three main routes. Pick the one matching your site:
WordPress: Install the “Tidio” plugin from the plugin directory, activate it, and log into your Tidio account from the plugin screen. Done — no code.
Shopify / Wix / Squarespace: Add Tidio from the platform’s app market and connect your account. The app injects the widget for you.
Any other site (static sites, custom builds, Astro, plain HTML): In the Tidio dashboard go to Settings → Live Chat → Installation, copy the JavaScript snippet, and paste it just before the closing </body> tag of your site’s layout template. It’s one <script> line. Redeploy, and the widget appears on every page.
Open your site in a private browser window — you should see the chat bubble bottom-right. If not: check the snippet is actually in the deployed HTML (view page source, search “tidio”), and clear any caching layer.
Step 3 — Make the widget not annoying (3 minutes)
Default chat widgets have a reputation problem: pop-up greetings, notification sounds, fake “agents are typing” theater. You want the opposite — quietly available. In Settings → Live Chat → Appearance:
- Match the widget color to your site.
- Turn off the automatic pop-up greeting, or delay it to 30+ seconds. A chat bubble that opens itself is the digital equivalent of a salesperson grabbing your arm.
- Set the offline message honestly: “Leave a message — I reply within a few hours” beats pretending to be a 24/7 operation.
That last point is worth underlining for solo founders: you don’t have to be always-on for chat to work. Tidio queues missed chats as tickets to your email, and visitors mostly just want to know their question landed somewhere.
Step 4 — Set up canned responses (3 minutes)
You’ll get the same five questions forever. In Settings → Canned Responses, pre-write answers for your top ones — pricing, availability, refunds, “do you do X” — with a shortcut like #pricing. When a chat comes in, you type the shortcut and a full, polished answer appears. This is the single highest-leverage feature in the product: it’s the difference between chat being a distraction and taking eight seconds.
Step 5 — Install the mobile app (2 minutes)
Get the Tidio app (iOS/Android) and log in. Now chats reach you wherever you are, and answering one takes about as long as answering a text. For a one-person business this is what makes live chat sustainable instead of a desk-chain.
That’s it — you have live chat.
When to pay (and the AI pricing catch)
Two honest notes on Tidio’s paid side, as of mid-2026:
Starter, ~$29/month (100 conversations/month) is worth it the moment chat is producing sales or saving real support time. The math is simple: if one recovered customer a month is worth more than $29, you’re done deciding.
Lyro, Tidio’s AI agent, is priced separately — from about $39/month on top of whatever plan you’re on, with its own conversation quota. Lyro reads your site/help content and answers routine questions automatically, and it’s genuinely decent at it. But note the stacking: Starter + Lyro is $68/month, and a busier setup on the Growth plan ($59) plus Lyro lands around $100/month. That can still be excellent value against hiring help — just don’t sign up expecting “$29 gets me the AI.” It doesn’t.
My suggestion for a small site: run free Tidio with canned responses first. Your first 50 conversations will tell you exactly which questions an AI could handle — and whether the volume justifies paying for one. Decide with that data.
The 15-minute payoff
For zero dollars and a quarter hour you get: a professional chat presence, questions reaching you (with notifications) wherever you are, pre-written answers to your most common questions, and hard data on whether your visitors want to talk to you at all.
While you’re upgrading your one-person stack: your email list needs the same treatment — see MailerLite vs Mailchimp for solopreneurs for which tool to build it on free.
FAQ
Does live chat slow my site down? Tidio’s widget loads asynchronously, so it doesn’t block your page render. On a fast static site the effect on load time is minor — but test your Core Web Vitals before/after if you’re chasing perfect scores.
What happens when I hit the free plan’s 50-conversation limit? The widget keeps working but you can’t handle new conversations until you upgrade. You won’t be surprise-billed — Tidio’s free plan has no card on file.
Can I use Tidio on more than one website? One project per account on the free plan. Multiple sites mean multiple accounts or a paid multisite setup.
Is live chat worth it if I can only answer a few times a day? Yes — set the availability expectation honestly in the widget and treat it as a faster inbox. Most visitors prefer “answered in 2 hours via chat” to “answered in 2 days via email.”
Plan limits and prices checked July 2026. Tidio has restructured its free plan before — confirm current limits at tidio.com/pricing before relying on them.
